Softball Coach Instructors subject to change and more to be announced. SWNT Assistant Coaches Named Tuesday, February 24, 2009
(Ottawa, ON) – Softball Canada is pleased to announce that three coaches have been added to the Senior Women’s National Team Coaching Pool. Melissa Basilio (Pickering, ON), Jim Peterson (Olympia, Washington) and Kim Wright (Surrey, BC) will serve as assistant coaches to Head Coach Mark Smith at the helm of the Canadian Women’s softball team this summer. Melissa Basilio was an assistant coach of the 2007 Canadian Junior Women’s National Team that participated in the ISF VIII Junior Women’s World Championship in Enschede, Netherlands. She has served as an assistant coach at Winthrop University since 2005. Jim Peterson has been an assistant coach of the Senior Women’s National Team since the beginning of the last Olympic cycle (2005), and will return to the team once again this summer. His experience prior to that was as an assistant coach at Wright University (2004-2006) and UNLV (2003-2004). Kim Wright joins the program after serving as the Head Coach of the Venezuela National Women’s Team from 1999 to 2004, and also served as an apprentice/guest coach for the Canadian Women’s team in 1999. She is the owner and head instructor of the WestCoast Softball Academy based in Surrey, BC. “The addition of Melissa, Jim and Kim to our staff compliments the program in a number of key areas” stated Mark Smith. “The athletes will definitely benefit from the knowledge and experience these coaches have to offer.” The Senior Women’s National Team will hold tryout and selection camps in May/June (dates and locations will be announced in the next few weeks), and the selected team will go on to compete at the Canada Cup (July 4-12 in Surrey, BC), the US World Cup (July 16-20, Oklahoma City) and the Pan American Championship (dates and location to be determined). | |||||||||||||||
